MP Shelly Glover highlights the importance of International Volunteer Day
December 02, 2009
Winnipeg, Manitoba – On Saturday, December 5, we will celebrate International Volunteer Day. For Saint Boniface MP and Parliamentary Secretary for official Languages Shelly Glover, it is an opportunity to recognize the exceptional work of Canadian volunteers at home and around the world. As you may know, over 75,000 Canadians have volunteered around the world for over 50 years. In 2008 alone, over 2,000 Canadians volunteered their time to help other communities. “This day gives us the opportunity to reflect about the important role that volunteering plays in our society,” said Mrs. Glover. According to a recent study, the work of volunteers around the world has positive repercussions not only abroad but also at home, because they are more likely to help people in their own communities. “Helping others is one of Canada’s great values and our government recognizes the importance of volunteering,” said Shelly Glover. “As the Member of Parliament for Saint Boniface, I am proud to recognize the dedication of all the volunteers in Manitoba, especially those from Saint Boniface.” “Volunteering helps Canadians build better, stronger, healthier communities. It is important to get involved, no matter what your participation is,” she said. |
