International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
November 25, 2009
Winnipeg, Manitoba — Shelly Glover, Member of Parliament for Saint Boniface and Parliamentary Secretary for Official Languages highlights the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. “Today, on this International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, let’s take a moment to think about the many girls and women for whom violence and the threat of violence is a daily occurrence,” said Glover. Until her election, Mrs. Glover had been an active member of the Winnipeg Police Force for almost 19 years. Inevitably, she often witnessed acts of violence against women and wants to see this situation end. “We have to fight against attitudes and behaviours that tolerate, excuse or turn a blind eye to violence against women. We also need to increase funding for victims services.” Violence against women in Canada knows no boundaries. Indeed, Canadians need look no further than their own communities and sometimes their own families to find instances of violence against women. “On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, I encourage all Canadians to join together to stop violence against women across this country and around the world. Violence against women is never acceptable, never excusable and never tolerable,” concluded Mrs. Glover. |
